Printmaking: Project #1

DaringHue-com_Printmaking_Project1(1)

Printmaking project #1 is complete! Our objective was to create a print that had a good balance of white and black. For class on Saturday, I need to turn in six of my best prints. I laid all of the prints on my bed tonight to whittle it down to the best six (out of fifteen).

I spent about two hours last Saturday making these prints on the press in class. I had done a couple of test prints on newsprint, and then finally decided to jump in with the good paper (Rives BFK). I think I am learning that the key to doing this is to wash your hands all the time. I ruined a couple of my best prints with thumbprints, and I definitely don’t want to repeat that again. It’s also a challenge printing during class because there is only one press, and over twenty students.

DaringHue-com_Printmaking_Project1(2)

Pictured above is the best print. For this image, I was inspired by Google Maps. I stitched together two screenshots from Visalia, CA to get the geometric design. I really wanted to play around with texture and learning how to carve on the linoleum block, so I made up a lot of the designs by finding different ways to use the carving tools.

DaringHue-com_Printmaking_Project1(3)

This is sort of dorky to admit, but it was super fun to sign all of the prints. I felt like a real artist when they were all signed. My hands were shaking because I only have six prints that I feel comfortable turning in for the grade, and I was afraid my hand would slip while I was signing them. For my own reference, here’s a link to an article on how to sign art prints.

My next project is a reduction print. I’m doing another geometric pattern using lime green, turquoise or dark blue and black. I’ll post some pictures of the print as I do each layer for my next printmaking update.

Project Life: Week 5 (2013)

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek5

It feels like this year is already flying by! I can’t believe I’m already finished with week five of Project Life. I did a lot of handwriting this week because I wanted to get the spread done quickly. It’s more important to finish this every week than it is to get too fancy. I think that was one of the reasons I quit last year. It took me so long to do every spread because I tried to make them absolutely gorgeous.

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek5(Left)

Top right is an index card cut in half. I like how it looks, and will probably repeat this. I liked that it already had lines for my writing. Bottom right has the inside of a W-2 envelope as the background, as that has been the project consuming my time at work. I was very happy to have wrapped that up this week.

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek5(Right)

Top photo is from printmaking class. I thought it would be fun to document the blocks, and not just the final output. Bottom right is a fun little printout from Facebook.

That’s about it for this week. Super simple! I’m loving seeing my album fill up with pages, so I’m motivated to keep going, even on the weeks that it feels like not much was happening.

Daily Pattern Challenge: January Wrap Up

DaringHue-com_JanuaryUpdate6

It’s a few days into February now, and I’m just now getting around to gathering my thoughts on the January daily pattern challenge. Overall, I think January was a success for me, and I enjoyed the process much more than I did in December. I loved carving the stamps, and I loved the immediacy of filling an entire sketchbook page with a pattern. I also liked that everything I made was repeatable, and that I could start again with a different stamp pad if I didn’t like the first color I chose. The daily art habit became much more a part of my life, and was something I did nearly every day without question, which was one of my major goals in participating in a daily challenge.

DaringHue-com_January23

The pattern above was one of my favorites. I was super excited to have created a stamp that I could flip around and have it repeat. I didn’t try anything like this again later in the month, but I’m excited to try it again sometime. Also, these were by far my favorite stamp pads, and I just love the color combination (also love these two colors with dark blue).

DaringHue-com_JanuaryUpdate7

For the pattern on the left I started with a geometric design, and then kept carving away lines as I stamped. I think it’s pretty subtle, but I like that if you look at it for a few seconds you start to see that the pattern gets more detailed at the bottom of the print. The pattern on the right side was created on January 31st, from five different stamps I had created earlier in the month. I think the simple color palette makes the stamps look a little more cohesive. It was fun to revisit some of the stamps on the last day.

What’s next? Honestly, I don’t know. On the first day of February I was really excited to start the daily challenge again, and had the idea that I’d make micro patterns in a sketchbook at lunchtime, but after three days I really wasn’t enjoying the tools I was using, or the patterns I was making, and I started to feel a little burned out at the thought of making a pattern every day. This tells me I probably need to switch it up. I have a giant list of techniques I’d like to try, so I think that’s a good place to start. For now, I’m taking a few days off from daily art making. I’ve been reading blogs, taking walks, watching Downton Abbey, and watching some history lectures from an online course I’m taking.

Check out #patternadayfeb to see Instagram patterns by other artists. Anika made a lovely bird pattern today.

Project Life: Week 4 (2013)

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek4

I’m still really enjoying Project Life in week four, and happy that I’m still “caught up”. Last week at this time, I was already behind by a couple of weeks. This is one of those weeks that I couldn’t imagine doing a full size album. I had trouble filling the pockets in the mini album for the week because I was focused on work, and didn’t do much that I thought particularly scrapbook worthy in the time that I was away from work.

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek4(Left)

Top right is my favorite kitty photo from the week. I did get some of him that were not blurry, but I love how woozy he looks in this shot. I should start making a cat vs person photo tally for this project. I have a feeling the cat would win by the end of the year. The pattern on the bottom is my favorite hand-carved stamp from the week. It took me a while to work out how to make the stamp line up when I flipped it around, and I was super happy with the result.

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek4(Right)

Top left pocket is from a drive over the Fremont Bridge. I must really be becoming a Portlander because when I saw that solid dark grey sky I immediately thought how pretty it looked. Top right pocket has a photo of my deviled eggs and some text using my grandma’s typewriter. Bottom left is a quote from this video of David Rees, who makes his living as an artisanal pencil sharpener. No joke, Bill and I both watched a twelve minute video of a guy talking about sharpening pencils. I love it when we watch videos separately and both find the same part to be our favorite. Bottom right pocket is a screenshot from Voxer app. I’m hesitant to admit this, but I watched some Twilight movies this week, and then sent photos of the movie while I was watching it to my best friend to torture her. So, I am a terrible friend with bad taste in movies. My only defense is that it was a rough week at work, and I needed something to take my mind off of it.

I worked on week five at the same time, so that spread is already almost done. I’ll be back on Thursday with another Project Life post.

Sunday Seven: Things More Exciting Than The Super Bowl

Does anyone else love using Super Bowl Sunday to catch up on art projects or other productive things while everyone else is distracted by watching football? Here are seven things I did today that were more exciting than watching the game.

01. Watched videos of Maira Kalman talking about her work on YouTube. My goodness, I am so inspired by Maira Kalman’s work. It’s so colorful, and I love her observations and handwriting. Her work makes me want to paint again. And watching her talk about her work is even better than looking at it.

“In the end, it’s love and it’s work. What else could there possibly be? What do I want to do? What is the most wonderful thing I could be doing, and who are the most wonderful people I could be with.” – Maira Kalman

02. Visited 101 Florals. This blog documents a collaborative pattern project between Lindsay Nohl and Llew Mejia. Every week they create a pattern based on a floral topic. I loved seeing the different ways that they interpret each topic. Gorgeous patterns!

DaringHue-com_SundaySeven_020313(1)

03. Made a pattern. I started another round of the daily pattern challenge. This month I decided to make teeny tiny (1 12 by 1 38“) patterns in a sketchbook. I’m planning to do my patterns at work so that I will get away from my desk for a little bit every day, instead of eating with one hand and typing with the other. If you’d like to join in, you can visit Anika’s blog for details, or you can check out all of my patterns from February on Flickr.

04. Picked up photos at Walgreens. All of my photos (eight photos) for two weeks of Project Life were only 91 cents total today. Coupon code EVERYSIZE gets you 40% off all prints and enlargements through February 9th if you order online.

05. Worked on Project Life. I got a little behind last week because of a busy work week, but I’m caught up again. I worked on two weeks today, and I’ll be posting my week 4 photos tomorrow.

06. Took a walk. A friend and I promised each other twenty minutes of physical activity every day this month. Am I ever grateful for this promise. Sometimes when you are just getting started with a habit again it is easier to keep a promise to someone else than yourself (sad, but true). So, I’m glad she’s sending me her updates, and waiting for mine. It was cold today, but I had a nice walk. I saw lots of little colorful houses, and it made me want my own, with a porch and a swing. I would probably have a purple house with a green door. Someday…

07. Cleaned the refrigerator. Still more exciting than watching the Super Bowl. I found some gravy in the back from Thanksgiving that I’m pretty sure Bill and I were both hoping that the other would eventually clean out. I’m not sure what’s in that gravy, but there was no mold. Pretty scary.

I have the day off of work tomorrow, so I’ll be working on some projects, and prepping a couple of posts for the blog. Hoping you all had a creative weekend!

List it Tuesday: Reusable Grocery Bags (Things You Collect)

DaringHue-com_List-it-Tuesday_ThingsICollect_Blog

Today’s List it Tuesday topic at Artsyville is Collections. My sister would probably laugh at this, but I don’t consider myself a person who intentionally keeps a lot of collections. Unintentionally? Oh yes, that I do. Magazines, paint brushes, blank journals, yarn and art books are just a few.

After thinking about it for a few days, I realized that one of my favorite unintentional collections is of reusable grocery bags. Pulling all of the bags out of the closet, I could see little bits of my history spread out in front of me, and I realized how much like a scrapbook it was. For many of the bags, I can remember in detail the place, people I was with, the weather, and specifics of what I was doing when I bought or received the bags. It was fun to use this List it Tuesday to document some of my favorites.

Left to right.

01. Powell’s Books. This reminds me of my move to Oregon in 2007. I remember how much I loved Powell’s, and how lucky I felt to be able to roam from room to room. This is still one of my favorite places.

02. Limes. This one is from a supermarket in Perth, Australia that I visited with my friend Hilary. I loved the little market, but more importantly loved the color of the bag and the fact that my last name was printed on it. My name is not super common, so it’s very rare to see it printed on anything.

03. Dog/Kitty Bag. The name is blurred out for privacy, but this bag is connected to my boyfriend’s work. It reminds me of how happy we both were when he found this job after his layoff.

04. Pukeko! This was my favorite bird when I visited New Zealand. This bag was sent to me by my friend Hilary, and it reminds me of my time there.

05. Green Canada. This bag is from my first trip to Vancouver, BC with my sister and cousin. I remember the three of us roaming around a supermarket looking for strange Canadian snacks. I also used this bag at the Granville Island Market.

06. Pike Place Market. This is from a couple of years ago with Bill in Seattle. We had just bought the most delicious fresh juice I had ever had, and then found some rambutan at about $18 a pound. I only bought a few of those, but we also got some really fresh peaches that day.

07. Intel. My ex-manager gave me this bag when she moved on to a position at Intel. This bag reminds me of that time in my life, and how it changed after she left. I got a good new boss, her old desk, and a lot more responsibility.

08. Target. This one doesn’t have any backstory. It’s just one of my favorites visually. I love the little black bird perched on top of the tree.

09. Clementine/Whole Foods. This bag reminds me of our move back to Portland from the suburbs last year. Whole Foods is one of our closest markets, and I’m there more than my wallet would like to admit.

10. Foodland. I love the little illustrations on this bag. It shows how to make Spam Musubi. We bought this in Lahaina, Maui last year. We were buying some fresh fish and vegetables to cook in our room that night. I think this was one of my happiest days ever. Bill made the most delicious fish, and we ate it on the table outside of our room under the stars.

Thanks for checking out my illustrated list! Hope you have a great Tuesday.

What’s New? Vine

Twitter and Instagram are buzzing about Vine right now, so I jumped in last night. You can read more about Vine here and here, but basically it’s a app that lets you record 6 second videos in segments. You can stop/start the camera by pressing down on the screen. I can already see so many fun projects coming out of this. I’ve created two videos of my sketchbooks. I’m looking forward to creating mini tutorials and recording some of my artwork as I make it. It will be fun to share works in progress there.

Are you on Vine? I’m daringhue there. Let’s connect!

Project Life: Week 3 (2013)

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek3

I’m still loving filling little pockets for Project Life in week three! Honestly, I’m pretty impressed by anyone who does this weekly in a larger album. It’s sometimes hard for me to fill seven little pockets, but maybe as I continue to work on this I’ll get better at taking more photos and writing down stories.

After scanning my pages, I realized that I reference the return of my favorite Indian food cart in three out of seven pockets. That should either give you an idea of how good the cart is, or how boring my week was. If you’re ever in Portland (or are lucky enough to live here), please do yourself a favor and get Shahi Paneer at Bombay Chaat House. It’s $7 and is big enough for two meals. It’s probably one of my favorite meals in all of Portland. The cart is downtown on Yamhill & 12th. Their tagline is “This is not just a food cart… it’s where food is made with love.” Oh, so true.

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek3(Left)

The patterned strip on the date card in the top left was from a scrap of newsprint (not newspaper, typo in my journaling) from printmaking class. Not a lot happened this week, so I typed up some texts. Photo in bottom right corner is of our coffee table pre-weekend cleanup. I’ve doing most of my artwork hunched over the coffee table, but I really should switch over to my art desk to make my back happier. Unfortunately the coffee table is closer to the heater, so that’s been winning out lately.

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek3(Right)

Top left has some tiny illustrations of the things I most commonly buy at Whole Foods, with some stickers from my salad container. The happy photo was taken while driving over the Fremont bridge on Friday morning. The sun came out, and there was the most lovely haze over the river and buildings. So, so pretty. I also saw a van that looked like a Mondrian painting that morning, so it was a very happy commute. Pattern is a section of my unfinished test print on newsprint paper from printmaking class. I’ll be finishing carving the linoleum block tomorrow night, and printing on the good paper in class on Saturday.

DaringHue-com_ProjectLifeWeek3_Insert

I added an insert this week, including my patterns from January 1-15. This is a coin page protector cut down to fit in the album. The pockets are 2×2″. I’m not sure I’m sold on adding inserts. I feel like this one breaks up the spread and makes it look too busy, but maybe that’s just because the patterns are a little overwhelming all together.

I’ll share one link before I sign off for the night. I recently discovered paper.li, where you can curate your own online newspaper. Bronwyn has created one called Celebrating #ProjectLife. It’s a great little collection of links to blog posts and stories about Project Life. If you are working on this project, you will love it!

Daily Pattern Challenge: January Update

DaringHue-com_JanuaryUpdate4

I’m twenty-one days into the daily pattern challenge… or eighteen if you’re counting days of actually making patterns. Ah yes, I’ve had a slip. I can’t remember what my excuse was on Thursday, but then on Friday and Saturday it was too easy to just continue the pattern (ha, pun totally not intentional!!). Yesterday I got back into it, and I’m currently procrastinating again by writing this blog post. Sometimes creating feels great, and everything looks good and makes you happy. And sometimes it’s a bit like exercise: hard to get started, but it feels a lot better when you’re done. Enough belly-aching, I suppose, and on to the patterns!

The pattern above on the left is inspired by the couches at school. I’d like to rework that one, but a little less messy next time. I’m still having trouble carving curved lines into the lino blocks, so that’s something I’d like to practice more.

The pattern above on the right is inspired by a co-worker’s shirt. She noticed me staring at her with a funny look during a meeting, and I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was trying to memorize the lines on her shirt! I tagged her to the pattern on Facebook last week, and the very next day she wore a pretty patterned scarf just for me. So sweet! Admittedly, it does feel a little odd to be “coming out” about my secret art life to some co-workers. Many of them wonder what I’m going to “do” after I’m finished with art classes. It’s a little hard to explain that the lovely thing about art is that is has nothing to do with work at all.

DaringHue-com_JanuaryUpdate5

The pattern above on the left is inspired by nothing in particular, and I was looking for an easy pattern at the end of a long day. The grey color is a new stamp pad that I’m loving. The pattern on the right was meant to be an exploration of texture, but it ended up looking like rain to me. Very Portland-ish.

I’m off to make my pattern for the night before bed. You can find my patterns posted on Instagram daily. You may also want to check out #patternadayjan or #letsmakepatterns to see work every day from talented and creative artists.

Happy Monday, and my best wishes to you for a creative and colorful week!
